Culture.ee’s weekly recommendations: 7–13 Jan 2019

The 85-year-old US supreme court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has a very long career behind and, unexpectedly, she has become a character that popular culture loves. Yet even her greatest admirers did not know to date what a unique journey had Ginsburg go through before she became the US supreme court justice. RBG introduces the life and career of Ginsburg.

Age Juurikas, a charming piano player with a forceful performing style who released her debut album last year, is performing the masterpieces of musical literature with string trio Fresh. The concert is filled with passion, sublime emotions, internal rumination, and joint virtuosic music-making.

“Aquarela” takes audiences on a deeply cinematic journey through the transformative beauty and raw power of water. Filmed at 96 frames-per-second, the film is a visceral wake-up call, revealing that humans are no match for the sheer force and capricious will of Earth’s most precious element. From the precarious frozen waters of Russia’s Lake Baikal to Miami in the throes of Hurricane Irma to Venezuela’s mighty Angel Falls, water is “Aquarela’s” protagonist, with director Victor Kossakovsky capturing her many personalities in startling visual detail.

The museum opens the 2019 exhibition programme with the exhibition “Objects of Attention”, curated by Estonian based anthropologist Francisco Martínez. In this exhibition, ordinary things are revised into objects of attention. Ten artists have been invited to reflect on the capacity of artefacts to spark political concern and raise awareness of actual social challenges. Through the engagement of these artists with and through the expressive (material, design, functional, indexical) potential of things, everyday items have been transformed into devices for thinking about the contemporary — through topics such as migration, gender, environmental sustainability, digital rubbish, obsession with changes, and the role of humans in an automated world.

The short ballets of Tiit Helimets, Eve Mutso and Jevgeni Grib will be performed.

There will be a two-hour concert with the most supreme songs of The Doors, starting with “Light my Fire” and finishing with “L.A. Woman”. The Doors Tribe, The Doors tribute group from Estonia, has been making music since the end of 2010 and has been given a number of wild lives in Estonia and abroad. Bourbon Sugar is the power trio of psychedelic rock’n’roll and is also paying tribute to their favourite artists.

In recent years, tenor Heldur Harry Põlda, a young singer, has received additional training in London in the speciality of classical singing. Now, he will perform with his brother Johannes Põlda, a violinist and finalist in Klassikatähed (Classical Stars) 2018. The brothers are accompanied on the piano by Lea Leiten, an experienced chamber musician.

On Sunday, January 13 at 5 p.m., the opening concert of the series “150 Years of Song Celebrations” will be held at the Tallinn St. John’s Church. The selected parts of Urmas Sisask’s “Gloria Patri” will be performed. The performers include the members of the Estonian Chamber Choirs Union: Collegium Musicale Chamber Choir, Chamber Choir of Estonian Academy of Arts, Chamber Choir Sireen, Girls’ Choir Kammerhääled, Chamber Choir Crede, Mixed Choir Noorus and Chamber Choir Head Ööd, Vend. Conductors are Kristel Marand, Kristina Sildos, Ilmars Millers, Kärolin Orav, Taavi Hark, Karin Kuulpak, Nele Erastus and Pärt Uusberg. Artistic director of the concert is Kristel Marand.

The record market celebrates its jubilee year! The January market will take place on Sunday, January 13, 2019, at the Red Emperor Club and a new album will be presented by Estonian electronic music veteran Out-Or. Out-Or is a creator of electronic music from Estonia. He has been a producer already for more than 25 years, since 1993. Out-Or’s 8th album “Structures” is a compilation of his current works on different electronic music fields. It is a mixture of ambient and clever beats, but also deeper futuristic bass music. All that is well-produced in his own unique and interesting ways, with some fresh influences from outer space.
