Theatre festival “Midwinter Night’s Dream”

Midwinter Night’s Dream is not a Shakespeare festival, although the name might imply it – the paraphrase refers to the magic time between Christmas and New Year, when anything is possible. The idea of organising a festival was born after the City Theatre had moved into its freshly renovated new wing.

Elmar Kits(1913–1972) is considered one of the most prominent and prolific artists of Estonia. His 1966 personal exhibition, where most of the 105 works were completed during the previous year, is the first triumph of abstract art in Estonia and one of the most important landmarks of the art innovation of the end of the 1960ies. The 1994 catalogue of Elmar Kits states: “This exhibition can be named the manifestation of modern art and one of the pinnacles of the art of the 1960ies.”

Riina Roosipuu, the director of the TV Tower, says that the TV Tower is the best venue to present the best Estonian nature photos, as the views from the tower complement the feeling one gets from the photos, playing with the views depending on the weather, and allowing many foreign visitors to witness the high quality of our nature photography as well. Since the year 2000, the Eesti Loodus magazine has organised 16 annual photography competitions. For this exhibition, 50 works have been selected from 80 award-winning photos of the last three competitions.
