Exhibition "Abstraction as an open experiment"

"Abstraction as an open experiment" focuses on the implementation and interpretation of abstractionism and abstract systems in recent past and contemporary art.

This is the first institutional exhibition to re-exhibit the early geometric creation of Sirje Runge (born in 1950) and study it in an international context. Runge’s drawings, paintings, and slide projections are presented with the actions, movies, photos, and image compositions of Eastern European artists Dora Maurer (born in 1936) and Zofia Kulik (born in 1947), who have taken over the modern European art scene with their works from the 1960s and 1970s. Falke Pisano (born in 1978) continues the somewhat playful abstracts of thoughts and form from the 1960s and 1970s by presenting them in a modern conceptual framework.

Thinking about the changing process of understanding and giving meaning to art history, "Abstraction as an open experiment" seems to be particularly relevant in a situation where the liberating potential of creativeness has been hijacked by neoliberal cultural industries and corporate design which has domesticated the abstract form.

We invite you to the opening of the exhibition on 14 September 2018 at 6 p.m. in the Tallinn Art Hall at Vabaduse väljak 8.

Sirje Runge (EE), Zofia Kulik (PL), Dóra Maurer (HU), Falke Pisano (NL) with Jüri Okas (EE), Benoît Maire (FR), and Przemyslaw Kwiek (PL)

Curator: Mari Laanemets
