Eksperimenta! 2017

Eksperimenta! 2017 takes place from October 20 to December 3, being the only international students' triennial for contemporary art in the region.

From 21 October to 3 December, the exhibitions of the international Experimenta! contemporary art triennial for students will be open at the Tallinn Art Hall, the Art Hall Gallery, the Tallinn City Gallery, Academy of Arts Gallery, Museum of Photography, and Tallinn conference centre at the SOKOS Hotel. The theme of this third edition of Experimenta! is “Art and the Economy”.

You are invited to the opening of the triennial at the Tallinn Art Hall on Friday, October 20th at 6 p.m.

The theme of this year’s triennial and the associations with the economy arose from the workshops conducted during the last triennial in 2014, where regardless of which the end the young people started from, they arrived at our economic model and the sustainability of our living environment and responsible business.

The main exhibition of the triennial Disruption at the Tallinn Art Hall presents over 70 works from young artists in ten countries. With the help of contemporary art tools, the artists, who range in age from 14 to 21, analyse the situation in the world and the economy. The answers run the gamut from the pragmatic to the romantic to the mocking – "We will never be equal to each other", "Let’s game the system!", "Welcome to eternal nothingness!" The means of expression include traditional pencil and paint, as well as photography, installation and video. The works express seriousness and naivete, erudition and spontaneity, a recognition of the need for cooperation, and the experience of working together. Eksperimenta! speaks to today’s adults about who is gaining on them and how.

Participants in the exhibition include young artists from Germany, Russia, Brazil, Slovenia, Canada, Turkey, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Extensive exhibition tours, workshops and seminars and well as a pocket-friendly catalogue accompany the exhibition.

Experimenta! is an art festival for young people, which by integrating contemporary art and education seeks to promote critical and creative thinking in society. Experimenta! occurred for the first time in 2011 as one of the important events during Tallinn’s tenure as the European Capital of Culture.

In addition to the exhibitions, the Experimenta! programme includes the IDEE lab and a busy auxiliary programme with about a dozen events ranging from a film programme to graffiti workshops. Experimenta! is part of the EV 100 programme called "A Hundred Art Landscapes". This time the triennial is being organised by Sally Studio and the Tallinn Art Hall.
